Bowl-ero Lanes' first Holiday Scratch Singles Eliminator attracted a star-studded field made up of a "Who's Who" of Colorado bowlers on December 23rd.
After qualifying in the 31st (next to last) spot, Dennis Samsel, Colorado Springs, went undefeated in his first four (best 2-out-of-3) matches before facing off with Shawn Lee in the championship round.
It was in that match that Samsel suffered his first loss of the day 192-201. He immediately bounced back, starting the next game with the front-eight strikes, which he needed for a 268-248 win taking the match to the final game to determine the champion. In the finale, in what proved to be a grueling marathon of a day, Samsel outlasted Lee 216-165 and took home the $1,500 first place prize.
Samsel and Lee had been bowling for nine-and-a-half hours on the demanding and challenging PBA Tournament of Champions lane condition, a 50-foot unforgiving pattern that leaves no room for error. Samsel averaged only 184 over the five games of qualifying, but once in match play, he was unstoppable as he breezed through four opponents before facing Lee for the title.
In the Round of 32 he defeated second-seed, Scott Christensen, one of four youth bowlers in the field, 210-166, 236-160. In the Round of 16 he dispatched fourth-seed, Tom Nault, 226-178, 222-195. In the Round of 8 he eliminated one of two women finalists, Angela Dato, 203-145, 229-198. Then, in the semi-final round he trounced Garrett Maxey 278-198, 256-204.
In all, 62 players took to the lanes including four top youth bowlers and two champions from the PBA Ladies Tour, Tish Johnson and Amy Stolz. The format was five games of qualifying followed by single-elimination (best-2-out-of-3) match play. The tournament paid out more than $5,000 in prize money. The high qualifier was Brian Hayes (1,105). Low to qualify was Marco Popovich (915).
Bowl-ero Lanes owner, Paul Kreins, announced that the center will host its next event on Sunday, March 16, 2008, as a pre-cursor to its PBA Regional event April 18-20.
